Founded in 1993, Salt of the Earth has been at the forefront of sustainable development for more than three decades. In 2013, it launched one of the UK's first refillable spray deodorant system, six years ahead of major competitors, and today offers one of the widest ranges of refillable natural deodorants globally, spanning sprays, roll-ons and sticks.
Sustainable Development
Its refill systems use at least 70% less plastic than single-use alternatives and have replaced the equivalent of more than 2.3 million plastic bottles since launch. Since 2021 alone, Salt of the Earth's refill innovations have cut the equivalent of 23.66 tonnes of plastic packaging, while refill sales increased by 550% between 2021 and 2024.
Sustainability is also embedded in the company's manufacturing operations. Most Salt of the Earth products are manufactured in-house at its Hampshire facility, which has operated on renewable electricity since 2020.
The company has recently invested in 126 solar panels, alongside air source heat pump technology, as part of its ambition to become electricity-positive by 2027, generating more electricity than it uses.
Speaking following the official presentation, Thomas Laird, Managing Director and co-owner of Salt of the Earth, said:
“We’re incredibly proud to receive a King’s Award for the second year running. For us, sustainability has never been something separate from running a successful business – it’s part of how we build one. Whether that’s investing in refillable products, reducing plastic or generating more of our own renewable energy, we’ve found that making better environmental choices can also make strong commercial sense. As we continue to grow internationally and prepare to launch in the US, we want to show that British manufacturing, sustainability and commercial success can go hand in hand.”
Salt of the Earth's sustainability credentials are underpinned by independent certification. The company is a certified B Corporation and Living Wage employer, while all its products are certified 100% COSMOS Natural by the Soil Association and approved by the Vegan Society and Cruelty Free International.
Through its partnership with Ecologi, Salt of the Earth has also funded the planting of more than 13,400 trees since 2020.
The company is already distributed internationally, while in the UK its products are stocked by major retailers including Holland & Barrett and Boots, alongside independent health stores and online channels. Its 2025 King's Award for Enterprise in International Trade recognised the company's strong export growth.
With its second consecutive King's Award now officially presented and a US launch on the horizon, Salt of the Earth is entering the next stage of its growth as it seeks to demonstrate that product innovation and international commercial success can go hand in hand.
