Lots of little changes since 1993

Keeping you odour free since '93

We've been making natural deodorants since 1993, and every year since then we've tried to do it a little better - better ingredients, better packaging, better choices. We're not perfect, but we are genuinely committed to making products that work brilliantly without cutting corners on what goes into them or how they're made.

Our story

A family affair

Salt of the Earth was founded in 1993 and adopted in 2005 by mother and son team Sally and Thomas, working from Sally's kitchen table, which was either charmingly entrepreneurial or mildly chaotic depending on who you ask.

Today, we're still family-owned and independently run from Chandlers Ford, Hampshire, with a team of around 25 people selling to more than 35 countries. We've picked up 76 awards along the way, including a King's Award for Enterprise in International Trade in 2025.

Being independent means we answer to our customers, not shareholders. We're also proud members of the Living Wage Foundation, because doing the right thing starts with looking after the people who make it all happen.

Ingredients and manufacture

What goes in matters

All Salt of the Earth deodorants are formulated with ingredients of 100% natural origin - plant-derived ingredients, minerals, and fragrances from essential oils and botanical extracts. We've never used synthetic ingredients, and we're not about to start.

Our UK-manufactured products carry the COSMOS Natural certification, assessed by the Soil Association and transitioned to COSMOS Standard V4 in 2024. We're also certified by the Vegan Society and approved by Cruelty Free International under the Leaping Bunny programme.

Made in Hampshire

All of our sprays, roll-ons, sticks, and balms are manufactured at our facility in Chandlers Ford, Hampshire. Headquarters, production, and warehouse all sit under one roof.

Our facility runs on renewable electricity backed by Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin certificates. We've also installed a rooftop solar array which, on an annual basis, is expected to produce more than 100% of our electricity needs. Realistically we expect to use around 45% directly and export the rest to the grid.

Sustainability in practice

  • Headquarters, production, and warehouse under one roof
  • Renewable electricity backed by REGO certificates
  • Rooftop solar expected to exceed annual electricity demand
  • Our crystal deodorants are the exception and are not manufactured in the UK

Packaging and formats

Real choices, less waste

We offer one of the widest ranges of natural deodorant formats in the world - sprays, roll-ons, sticks, and balms - because giving you a choice of formats also gives you a choice of how much packaging you use. We've been pioneering refillable deodorants since 2013, and every year we push a bit further.

Sprays

Our refillable spray system launched in 2013, one of the first on the market. In 2024 our spray bottles moved to prevented ocean plastic, and in 2025 we launched mono-material refill pouches that save approximately 85% plastic compared to buying individual bottles.

Roll-ons

In 2022 we launched one of the world's first refillable roll-on systems, custom-designed with local Hampshire firm Rodd Design. The 75ml roll-on pairs with a refill bottle that delivers seven refills and saves approximately 65% plastic. Pouch refills followed in 2025.

Sticks

Launched in 2021 with refillability built in from day one. Choose between a 50% PCR plastic stick designed to be refilled, or card-based refills made from FSC-certified cardboard.

Balms

Launched in 2020. Recyclable glass jar, aluminium lid, and a grass paper label.

Ecologi

Funding climate action with Ecologi

Since 2020, we've partnered with Ecologi to fund verified climate projects and tree planting on behalf of our employees. So far, we've contributed to the planting of over 13,447 trees and supported climate projects spanning reforestation, forest protection, and clean energy initiatives worldwide.

This sits alongside the practical steps we take every day - renewable energy, refillable packaging, and choosing materials like recycled and prevented ocean plastic. It's one part of the picture, not a silver bullet.
