Roll-On Deodorant: A Natural Buyer's Guide
By Salt of the Earth
Roll-on deodorant is the format most of us grew up with, and it is still the one many people reach for first when they switch to natural. This guide covers how our natural roll-on works, the difference between refillable and original bottles, exactly what a refill saves you, and which scent to choose whether you are shopping for yourself, your partner or the whole household.
Salt of the Earth is a family-owned natural deodorant brand making deodorants in Chandlers Ford, Hampshire since 1993. Our refillable roll-ons and original roll-ons are certified 100% COSMOS Natural by the Soil Association, Cruelty Free International certified and registered with the Vegan Society.
How does natural roll-on deodorant work?
It is a deodorant, not an antiperspirant: it does not block sweat ducts and it is not designed to stop you sweating. Sweat itself has almost no smell. The odour comes from bacteria breaking it down, so that is what our formula targets.
The key active is potassium alum, a naturally occurring mineral salt. It is technically an aluminium salt, but it behaves very differently from the aluminium chlorohydrate in conventional sweat-blocking products. Potassium alum stays on the skin surface and helps keep odour-causing bacteria in check, rather than plugging the sweat duct. Alongside it you will find triethyl citrate, which helps slow the breakdown of sweat that causes odour, plus magnesium hydroxide and magnesium carbonate hydroxide.
How do you apply a roll-on deodorant?
Apply a thin layer to clean, dry skin and let it dry for about 30 seconds before getting dressed. That short pause is the one habit that makes the biggest difference with any water-based deodorant. A couple of rolls per underarm is plenty; more does not mean fresher.
If you are new to natural deodorant, your underarms may take a couple of weeks to adjust after years of sweat-blocking products. We explain what is going on in why your armpits need a few weeks to settle in. Spoiler: you do not sweat more, you just notice it more for a while.
What is the difference between the refillable and original roll-on?
Both are 75ml, both hold the same formula, and both come in the same scents. The refillable roll-on can open and be topped up from a refill; the original roll-on is a single-use bottle you recycle when it is empty. The refillable costs a pound more up front (£7.49 against £6.99 for scented, £6.49 against £5.99 for Unscented) and pays that back on the first top-up.
We have been making refillable deodorants since 2013, and depending on the format, refills at least 70% less plastic than the equivalent single-use bottles, measured by packaging weight. Since 2013 our refills have cut 23.66 tonnes of plastic, the equivalent of 2.3 million bottles. If you want the full picture, read refillable deodorant: how it works.
The original roll-on still has a place. If you are trying a scent for the first time, or buying one for a teenager who loses everything, the original is a lower-commitment way in. Our Amber & Sandalwood original roll-on is our most-reviewed roll-on of any kind, at 4.70 from 54 reviews.
How do roll-on deodorant refills work?
You unscrew your empty 75ml refillable roll-on, pour in from a refill bottle or pouch, screw the top back on and carry on. Our step-by-step post, how to use our refillable roll-on, has pictures if you would like to see it done.
There are two refill sizes:
- 525ml bottle (£32.99, or £24.99 for Unscented): tops up a 75ml roll-on up to seven times. The best value option if you have found your scent.
- 225ml pouch (£17.99, or £14.99 for Unscented): up to three top-ups, and up to 85% less plastic than buying three new roll-ons. Lighter, and easier to squeeze the last drop out of.
Here is what that means in money. An Unscented Natural Refillable Roll-On costs £6.49. The Unscented Roll-On Refill 525ml costs £24.99 and gives you up to seven top-ups, which works out at about £3.57 per top-up. That is roughly 45% less per 75ml than buying a new refillable bottle each time, and you only throw away one bottle instead of seven.
If you would rather see how the refills themselves are made, we fill around 30 pouches a minute at the factory and we wrote about how.
Which roll-on deodorant is best for floral and fresh scents?
Lavender & Vanilla, Peony Blossom and Neroli & Orange Blossom are the floral favourites, and our new Aloe & Lime is the fresh one.
The Lavender & Vanilla Refillable Roll-On has a 5.00 from 12 reviews. Cardamom and lemon on top, geranium and lavender in the heart, vanilla and cedarwood underneath. Soft, warm and very easy to wear every day.
The Peony Blossom Refillable Roll-On layers bergamot and lavender over peony and geranium, with a tonka and musk base. The Neroli & Orange Blossom Refillable Roll-On is zestier, with bergamot and orange over a sweet floral heart and a woody base, and is rated 4.55 from 11 reviews.
New in September 2026, the Aloe & Lime Refillable Roll-On is a clean, citrus scent for people who want fresh rather than floral or woody. You can read about the launch in Aloe & Lime: available now.
Which roll-on deodorant is best for woody and fresh scents?
The Vetiver & Citrus Refillable Roll-On is crisp citrus up front with forest-like woody notes behind it, finishing on tonka, sandalwood and vetiver. The original version of this scent is rated 5 star from 22 reviews, which we are not going to pretend we are not pleased about.
The Amber & Sandalwood Natural Refillable Roll-On is warmer: spice, citrus and floral notes with vine-ripened berries over labdanum, cedar and sandalwood. Think of it as the roll-on equivalent of a good wool jumper.
The Oud & Bergamot Refillable Roll-On is the richest of the three, a blend of spice, bergamot and cedarwood. If your aftershave shelf leans towards the dark and resinous, start here. Rated 4.60 from 10 reviews.
Frequently asked questions
Is natural roll-on deodorant an antiperspirant?
No. Our roll-ons are deodorants, not antiperspirants. They help neutralise odour and help keep odour-causing bacteria in check on the skin surface, but they do not block sweat ducts and are not designed to reduce sweating.
How many times can you refill a 75ml roll-on?
A 525ml refill bottle tops up a 75ml refillable roll-on up to seven times. A 225ml refill pouch tops it up up to three times. Both are available in Unscented and in our scented fragrances.
How long should roll-on deodorant take to dry?
Give it about 30 seconds. Our roll-ons are water-based, so a thin layer dries quickly. Apply to clean, dry skin and wait a moment before getting dressed.
