Which natural deodorant format should I choose?
Five formats, one approach. Sprays dry fastest and suit gym bags. Roll-ons give the most controlled application. Sticks travel well and go on dry. Balms apply with your fingers and suit drier skin. Crystal is a single mineral with nothing added at all. Our sprays, roll-ons and sticks are refillable, and every refill is the same formula as the original.
How do refillable deodorants work?
You buy the applicator once, then top it up from a refill pouch or bottle instead of buying a new one. Salt of the Earth has made refillable deodorants since 2013 and sells spray refills, roll-on refills and stick refills. The refill contains the same formula as the original, uses less packaging per millilitre, and costs less per use. Refills come in sizes up to one litre.
British-made natural deodorant since 1993
Salt of the Earth is a family-owned British brand making natural deodorants since 1993. We produce refillable sprays, roll-ons and sticks, plus balms, at our own factory in Chandlers Ford, Hampshire, and our crystal deodorants are a single mineral, potassium alum. Sally bought the company in 2005, her son Thomas has run it since 2008, and it is still owned by the same family.
Our deodorants are certified 100% COSMOS Natural by the Soil Association, registered with The Vegan Society and approved by Cruelty Free International. The business is B Corp certified and an accredited Living Wage employer, and holds two King's Awards for Enterprise: International Trade 2025 and Sustainable Development 2026. The exception to COSMOS certification is our crystal range, which is made in China.

Natural deodorant questions, answered
“Natural” has no legal definition for cosmetics in the UK, so instead of asking you to take our word for it, we have our products checked. Our sprays, roll-ons, sticks and balms are certified COSMOS NATURAL by the Soil Association, an independent standard that looks at where ingredients come from and how they're processed. Our crystals aren't COSMOS certified. See all our certifications.
Our sprays, roll-ons, sticks and balms are made at our own factory in Chandlers Ford, Hampshire, UK. The exception is our crystal deodorants, which are made from potassium alum in China. You can read more about how we make our products on our sustainability page.
Not always, and ours isn't across the board. Our sprays, roll-ons and crystals contain potassium alum, a mineral salt that contains aluminium. It isn't the aluminium chlorohydrate used in antiperspirants, but it is an aluminium salt, so we don't call those products aluminium-free. Our sticks and balms are aluminium-free: they use bicarbonate of soda instead of potassium alum.
It does what a deodorant is for: it tackles odour, not sweat, so you carry on sweating normally. Every product page carries verified customer reviews, so you can see how each format does. If you're switching from an antiperspirant, it can take a week or two to feel settled with a new deodorant.
Yes. Every deodorant we sell is registered with The Vegan Society and approved by Cruelty Free International. The Cruelty Free International Approval Programme checks the supply chain right down to ingredient manufacturer level, not just the finished product. We're also approved by the Vegetarian Society.
