Natural Deodorant: What It Is, How It Works and How to Choose One
Door Salt of the Earth
Natural deodorant is a deodorant made with ingredients of natural origin that works on odour rather than sweat. It does not block your sweat ducts the way an antiperspirant does; it helps keep odour-causing bacteria in check and absorbs moisture at the skin's surface. That one distinction explains almost everything else about how natural deodorant feels, how long it takes to get used to, and how to pick a good one. This guide covers all of it, in plain English, from a company that has been making the stuff for over thirty years!
Salt of the Earth is a family-owned natural deodorant brand making deodorants in Chandlers Ford, Hampshire since 1993. Our sprays, roll-ons, sticks and balms are certified 100% COSMOS Natural by the Soil Association, registered with the Vegan Society and certified by Cruelty Free International.
What does "natural deodorant" actually mean?
On its own, not much. There is no legal definition of "natural" in UK or EU cosmetics law, so any brand can print the word on the front of a bottle. What gives it meaning is an independent standard behind it.
The standard we use is COSMOS Natural, certified in the UK by the Soil Association. It sets out which ingredients are allowed and how they can be processed, bans a long list of synthetic ingredients, puts rules on packaging and manufacturing, and checks compliance with an annual inspection. Our formulas are certified 100% natural. A product cannot carry the logo on the strength of a marketing claim. We explain the detail in What does COSMOS Natural certification actually mean?
So when we say natural deodorant, we mean a deodorant that has been certified against a published standard, not one that simply has a leaf on the label. If a brand says natural and cannot point to a certification, it is worth asking what they mean by it.
How does natural deodorant work?
Natural deodorant works by dealing with the bacteria that cause body odour, not by stopping sweat. Fresh sweat has almost no smell. The smell arrives when bacteria living on your skin break it down. A natural deodorant interrupts that process in one or more of three ways: it helps keep the bacteria in check, it slows the breakdown of sweat, or it absorbs moisture at the surface so there is less for the bacteria to work on.
Different formats use different ingredients to do that. In our range it looks like this:
- Sprays and roll-ons are water-based. The key active is potassium alum, a naturally occurring mineral salt that sits on the skin's surface and helps keep odour-causing bacteria in check. Alongside it: triethyl citrate (which helps slow the breakdown of sweat), magnesium hydroxide, magnesium carbonate hydroxide, organically grown aloe vera, rosemary leaf extract and sunflower seed oil.
- Sticks and balms are completely aluminium-free. They rely on sodium bicarbonate (except our Unscented stick), magnesium hydroxide, magnesium carbonate hydroxide, zinc oxide, arrowroot powder and diatomaceous earth, in a base of shea butter, coconut oil and carnauba wax.
- Crystals are a single ingredient, potassium alum, which you wet and glide on.
None of these plugs the sweat duct. That is the whole point, and it is why a natural deodorant feels different from what you may be used to.
What is the difference between natural deodorant and antiperspirant?
An antiperspirant reduces wetness; a deodorant tackles odour. Conventional antiperspirants use aluminium chlorohydrate or aluminium zirconium salts that dissolve in sweat and form a temporary gel plug inside the sweat duct, so less sweat reaches the surface. A natural deodorant leaves the duct alone.
Potassium alum, which our sprays, roll-ons and crystals use, is technically an aluminium salt too, but it behaves very differently. It is a much larger molecule that stays on the skin's surface rather than dissolving into the duct. If you want to avoid every aluminium compound, our sticks and balms contain none at all. We go through the difference properly in our post on how potassium alum works.
Does natural deodorant actually work?
Yes, at the job it is designed to do. A natural deodorant helps you stay fresh by keeping odour in check, and ours are rated highly by people who use them every day. What it will not do is stop you sweating, and if that is what you are measuring it against, it will feel like it has failed.
We do not ask you to take our word for it. Our Crystal Deodorant Classic has 175 reviews averaging 4.84 out of 5, our Unscented Natural Deodorant Spray has 93 reviews averaging 4.88, just on our website alone. You can also check our reviews on our Amazon or our stockists, such as Holland and Barrett and Boots. Across the range we have picked up 78 industry awards, including two King's Awards for Enterprise. You can read the full list on our awards page.
There is one caveat, and it applies to every natural deodorant on the market: the first few weeks can be bumpy. If you have used an antiperspirant for years, your underarms are used to having the duct plugged. When you stop, you may notice more moisture than you are used to and a little more odour for a week or two whilst your skin adjusts. It passes. We wrote a whole post on it: Why your armpits need a few weeks to settle in.
Is natural deodorant the same as organic deodorant?
No. Natural refers to the origin of the ingredients; organic refers to how the plant ingredients were grown. COSMOS has two levels: COSMOS Natural, which our deodorants hold, and COSMOS Organic, which requires a minimum percentage of certified organic ingredients. A deodorant can be fully natural without being organic, and some ingredients (mineral salts, for example) cannot be organic at all because they are not grown. Our formulas do include organically grown aloe vera, but the product certification is COSMOS Natural, and that is the claim we make.
How do you choose a natural deodorant?
Pick the certification first, then the format, then the scent. In that order.
1. Check for a certification, not a word
Look for COSMOS Natural (or COSMOS Organic) on the pack. If animal welfare matters to you, look for the Vegan Trademark and Cruelty Free International certification as well; we explain the testing side in our post on Cruelty Free International certification. A brand that has gone through certification will say so clearly. All of ours are listed on our certifications page.
2. Choose a format that fits your routine
This is where most people go wrong, because they pick on scent and then find the format annoying. A quick guide:
- Spray: fastest to apply, dries in seconds, 100ml fits hand luggage. Refillable.
- Roll-on: the familiar one. Give it 30 seconds to dry. Refillable from a 525ml bottle (up to seven top-ups) or a 225ml pouch.
- Stick: dry on application, aluminium-free, best for travel and gym bags. Refillable by pushing a 75g card tube into the 84g case.
- Balm: aluminium-free, applied with a fingertip, plastic-free tin.
- Crystal: one ingredient, no scent, lasts a long time. Wet it and glide it on.
Our sprays, roll-ons and sticks have been refillable since 2013, and refills use roughly 65% to 85% less plastic than the equivalent single-use bottles, measured by packaging weight. If you would like the full picture, read Refillable deodorant: how it works and why it cuts plastic.
3. You can start unscented if your skin is sensitive
Fragrance is the most common cause of skin reactions in cosmetics, so if your skin is easily upset, start with an unscented product and add scent later. Some people also react to sodium bicarbonate, which is why our Unscented stick leaves it out. Whatever you choose, patch test on the inside of your elbow for 24 hours first.
Which natural deodorant should you try first?
For most people, a refillable spray or roll-on. For anyone avoiding aluminium compounds, a stick or balm. For the simplest possible option, a crystal. Here is one of each.
The Unscented Natural Deodorant Spray is our most-reviewed spray and the one we hand to people who say "just give me the straightforward one". It is a 100ml refillable pump spray with no fragrance at all.
If you would like a scent, the Lavender & Vanilla Refillable Roll-On is our best-loved fragrance in the roll-on format: cardamom and lemon on top, geranium and lavender in the heart, vanilla and cedarwood at the base. The 75ml bottle tops up from a pouch or bottle, so you buy it once and keep refilling it.
For an aluminium-free option, the Unscented Natural Deodorant Stick has no fragrance and no sodium bicarbonate, and it comes in an 84g refillable case. Our guide to natural deodorant sticks covers the whole stick range.
Prefer a balm? The Amber & Sandalwood Natural Deodorant Balm is our bestselling balm: aluminium-free, in a 60g plastic-free tin, with a warm scent of spice, citrus and berries over labdanum, cedar and sandalwood.
And the original: the Crystal Deodorant Classic is the product we started with in 1993 and still our most-reviewed. One ingredient, unscented, wet and glide. Like all our crystals it is registered with the Vegan Society and certified by Cruelty Free International.
Where is Salt of the Earth natural deodorant made?
In Chandlers Ford, Hampshire, at our own factory, where we also fill our refill pouches (we wrote about how we fill 30 pouches a minute). Sprays, roll-ons, sticks and balms are all made there; the crystal range is the exception. We are a family-owned business, a B Corp and a Living Wage employer, and since April 2026 the factory roof has carried solar panels that are estimated to provide around 45% of our electricity over a year. If you are curious who we are, Who owns Salt of the Earth? has the family tree.
Frequently asked questions
Does natural deodorant actually work?
Yes, at the job a deodorant is designed to do: tackling odour. Natural deodorants help keep odour-causing bacteria in check and absorb moisture at the skin's surface. They do not block sweat, because they are deodorants rather than antiperspirants, so you will still sweat normally.
What is the difference between natural deodorant and antiperspirant?
An antiperspirant uses aluminium chlorohydrate or similar salts to form a temporary plug in the sweat duct, block pores, and reduce wetness. A natural deodorant leaves the sweat duct alone and works on odour instead, using mineral salts, bicarbonate, magnesium and plant ingredients.
How do I know if a deodorant is really natural?
Look for an independent certification rather than the word natural on the front. COSMOS Natural, certified in the UK by the Soil Association, sets rules for ingredients, processing and packaging and is checked by annual inspection. Salt of the Earth sprays, roll-ons, sticks and balms are certified 100% COSMOS Natural.
Which natural deodorant should I start with?
If you are unsure, start with an unscented refillable spray or roll-on, which are the formats most people find easiest to switch to. If you want to avoid aluminium compounds entirely, choose a stick or balm. If you have sensitive skin, the Unscented stick has no fragrance and no sodium bicarbonate. Patch test any new product first.
