Festival Hacks: How to Pack Smart and Breeze Through the Bag Search

Festival season is glorious. Live music, questionable dancing, and three days of living out of a rucksack. Less glorious is the moment security fishes your deodorant out of your bag and drops it into the confiscation bin, never to be seen again. It happens to thousands of liquid deodorants and aerosols every summer. Here is how to pack smart, stay fresh all weekend, and glide through the bag search without losing a thing.

Can you take deodorant to a festival?

Yes, but not every kind. Aerosols are banned or size-restricted at most major UK festivals, and glass of any kind is banned almost everywhere. Solid deodorants and roll-ons are generally fine. The exact rules differ from event to event (Reading and Leeds ban aerosols over 250ml, whilst some day festivals ban spray cans entirely), so always check your festival's prohibited items list before you set off.

The safest option in your washbag is a solid deodorant: nothing pressurised, nothing that smashes, and nothing for security to quibble over.

The ultimate festival hack: a crystal deodorant

A crystal deodorant is a solid block of potassium alum, a natural mineral salt. Glide it over damp skin and it leaves a fine layer of mineral salts that stops odour-causing bacteria from getting started. No aerosol, no glass, no liquid, and nothing on the banned items list to worry about.

The Crystal Travel Deodorant: 50g of festival-proof freshness

Our Crystal Travel Deodorant (£4.49) is the one to pack. At 50g it takes up less room than a bag of crisps, it is unscented so it will not clash with your suncream or perfume/aftershave, and it is rated 4.87 out of 5 across 71 customer reviews. It also keeps going long after the headliners have gone home: around 7 months of daily use on average, and up to 18 months if you use it lightly. One festival, one summer, and most of the year after that, all from one little crystal.

How do you use a crystal deodorant?

Wet the crystal, glide it a few times over each clean underarm, and let it dry for a few seconds. That is it. At a festival, a splash from your water bottle does the job nicely. It goes on completely clear, leaves no white marks on your favourite band t-shirt, and because it is unscented you can layer whatever fragrance you like over the top! If you are new to crystals, our guide to the classic deodorant crystal covers the full story.

One thing worth knowing: a crystal is a deodorant, not an antiperspirant. You will still sweat (which is exactly what your body is supposed to do in a field in July), you just will not smell.

Flying to a festival abroad?

Here is where the crystal earns its keep twice over. Because it is a solid, it does not count towards the 100ml liquids limit in your hand luggage, so it sails through airport security as easily as it does the festival gate. We have covered this in more detail in our post on airport-friendly travel essentials.

More solid swaps for your festival kit

If you get on with the travel crystal, the rest of the crystal deodorant family is worth a look for home:

Prefer a fragrance with your freshness? Our natural deodorant sticks and deodorant balms are solid too, so they are just as happy in a festival bag as the crystal.

Quick festival packing hacks

  • Screenshot the banned items list before you leave home. Phone signal in a field of 100,000 people is not a given.
  • Go solid on toiletries. A crystal deodorant, a soap bar and a solid shampoo bar mean nothing to leak in your bag.
  • Pack bin bags. Dry seat, dirty laundry store and emergency poncho, all in one.
  • Bring a refillable water bottle. Most festivals have free refill points, and you will need it to wet your crystal anyway.
  • Earplugs and a power bank. Your ears and your phone will thank you on day three.

Who are Salt of the Earth?

Salt of the Earth is a family-run natural deodorant brand founded in 1993. We make natural deodorant sprays, roll-ons, sticks and balms at our factory in Chandlers Ford, Hampshire, and we are certified 100% COSMOS Natural by the Soil Association, B Corp certified and members of the Living Wage Foundation. The crystal range is the exception: crystals are cut from potassium alum and made in China, and as a single mineral salt they sit outside COSMOS certification. They are registered with The Vegan Society and Leaping Bunny approved by Cruelty Free International.

Festival deodorant FAQs

Can you take deodorant to a festival?

Yes. Solid deodorants and roll-ons are generally allowed at UK festivals. Aerosols are banned or size-restricted at most major events, so check your festival's prohibited items list before packing.

Does crystal deodorant actually work?

Yes. Applied to damp skin, potassium alum leaves a fine layer of mineral salts that stops odour-causing bacteria. It is a deodorant rather than an antiperspirant, so you still sweat naturally but without the smell.

How long does a crystal deodorant last?

The 50g Crystal Travel Deodorant lasts around 7 months with average daily use, and up to 18 months with lighter use. The 90g Crystal Classic lasts around 12 months with average daily use.

Is crystal deodorant vegan and cruelty-free?

Yes. Salt of the Earth's crystal deodorants are registered with The Vegan Society and Leaping Bunny approved by Cruelty Free International.
